Angel
Lynette Diaz is an American/New Zealand singer-songwriter whose voice and style recall the female folk singers of the 1960s while exploring contemporary themes of universal love and dignity. The single “Angel” grew from a collaboration between Lynette Diaz and the late New Zealand songwriter Pete Love.
“Angel is a song that speaks from the heart of despair — a lamentation for help from within and beyond oneself, a call to the Divine,” Lynette explains. Pete brought the bones of the song to a practice session, and the pair worked on it that evening, trimming the long instrumental breaks and simplifying the structure. It resonated deeply with them, and they performed it at every gig.
In January 2012, Lynette and Pete recorded the guitar and main vocal parts at Angels Gate Studio. Irish-born, New Zealand-based singer-songwriter Diana Hickey joined as another voice in the Angel choir. Plans to finish the song were delayed as Pete worked on his solo debut album and Lynette pursued solo projects. Pete passed away after a brief sudden illness in June 2012 at the age of 45, leaving his mark on the Christchurch community, and completing the song became essential. Christchurch cellist Nicole Reddington provided the hauntingly sublime final “voice” in the choir, and Kevin Allison completed mixing and mastering at Angels Gate. The song is dedicated to their Angel, Pete Love.
