Story

An original song written a few years ago that I usually perform with the Manuka Hunnies. I generally don't play guitar when we perform this song, but decided to record a version with my guitar this very late night/early morning, as the winds turn to gales out my window.

I've kinda turned this song on its head and feel like it's grown up a bit. The juxtaposition of playing a role verses being more playful.

Recently, the  act of performing songs as a busker has been much more playful and joyful and filled me with an immense amount of gratitude, as I get to interact with so many people, Like the lines in the song, open skies truly have been a place of solace; and our evolution is a song yet to be sung. xx

Lyrics

Roles We Try To Play

V1:

You wake up after a raging storm

Thoughts reordered by the dreams you've worn

Find some solace in that open sky

Still you don't know the how or why

Ch:

'Cause we always crave the answers

We always want our way

We're bound and constricted

By the roles we try to play

v2:

And we're guilty of self-deception

Been caught out in plain rejection

In the quest for some perfection

We all got lost and found maybe somewhere

Ch:

'Cause we always crave the answers

We always want our way

We're bound and constricted

By the roles we try to play

Let's throw them all away

V3:

And maybe in that aftermath

Heart feels cleansed and breathless again

Flowers face towards the sun

Our evolution is a song yet to be sung

Ch:

'Cause we always crave the answers

We won't always get our way

Let's not be bound and constricted

By the roles we try to play

The roles we try to play

Let's throw them all away

The roles we try to play

Repeat V1

Refrain:

(Try to play, try to play, try to play)
